About Judge Ian Richards

Judge Ian Richards, the son of a mechanic and registered nurse, grew up in South Florida. He attended Shadowlawn Elementary School in the heart of Liberty City, and later graduated from Norland Senior High School. As a highly motivated young man, Judge Richards earned an accounting degree from Florida International University and received a scholarship to the University of Miami's School of Law. Judge Richards began his legal career as an intern with the Broward Public Defender's Office. After receiving his Juris Doctor, He went on to become a Prosecutor with the State Attorney's Office where he handled hundreds of cases in misdemeanor-domestic violence, juvenile, and felony courts. In his years of private practice, Judge Richards defended the rights of his clients in real estate, felony, misdemeanor, landlord tenant, and immigration cases. Judge Ian Richards is a member of the TJ Redick Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association, the Broward Bar, the Kiwanis Club and the Lauderhill Chamber of Commerce.

Community Involvement

Judge Richards is a humble man who takes community involvement seriously. He demonstrated his commitment to the community through his involvement in small and minority businesses development teaching seminars in practical contract and business law at the Enterprise Community Center (ECC). He also conducted presentations for Commissioner Barbara Jordan's District forum. Judge Richards actively volunteered to mentor young attorneys taking the Bar and at the Caribbean Bar Association's citizenship drive. While practicing law, Judge Richards volunteered his time in pro bono cases and dedicated time to speak to at-risk youth. Judge Richards was the president of his homeowner association in charge of revitalizing his Miramar community. During his undergraduate and law school years, Judge Richards volunteered in a state sponsored facility for more than two years where he lived with and took care of formerly homeless elderly.

Judge Richards regularly addresses schools and churches on a wide range of topics. He is available to appear before any non-partisan community organizations. Judge Richards also welcomes all members of the community to visit the courtroom. We make the constitution work by giving all parties a fair and public trial. Judge Ian Richards is a loving husband and proud father of one daughter and two young sons. His wife was a cardiac registered nurse at Memorial Hospital and is now a medical translator.
